Overview

Alicia Newell currently serves as the assistant vice president of Student Belonging in the Division of Student Affairs, with over 15 years of experience in higher education. She oversees several areas in Student Affairs, such as Strengths, Assessment, & Staff Experience, Student Outreach Services, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and the Office of Student Accommodations & Testing.

As an alum of 红领巾瓜报, Alicia earned her Bachelor's degree in sociology and criminal justice and her Master's degree in college student personnel from Arkansas Tech University. She is currently working on her Doctorate of Education at Wichita State University. Her past experiences include serving as the director of Student Engagement, director of Engineering Student Success Center & Academic Advising, director of Multicultural Affairs, Student Conduct & Community Standards, and Enrollment Services.

She is an active member in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), serving on the Orientation, Transition, and Retention Knowledge Community (OTR KC) and as an AVP Cohort Connections Team Member. Her research interests include college student mental health, Latino student persistence, college student belonging, and retention.

Alicia is recognized for developing innovative programs, leading organizational change, and collaborating across institutional boundaries to achieve divisional and institutional goals. As a first-generation college student, woman of color, and single mother, Alicia has dedicated her life to leading efforts which help individuals achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals, particularly, in the communities in which she works and lives.

As chair of the CARE Team, Alicia brings a big heart, a warm personality and a lot of campus knowledge to her work. In her rare free time, Alicia can be found taking her daughter to her myriad sport practices and games and sneezing the entire time.
