Drug & Alcohol Counseling / Programs
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides substance abuse assessment screening and brief substance abuse counseling for university employees and students. The Alcohol Education Program is an educational treatment program available for students who have been sanctioned for violating university alcohol policies or as an elective treatment for students who are identified to have problems with alcohol. CAPS also provides online alcohol and marijuana screening at wichita.edu/screenings.
The Substance Abuse Assessment Program is available for students who have been sanctioned for violating university alcohol or drug policies, as well as being available as an elective assessment for students who are identified to have problems with alcohol or other drugs. In addition, alcohol or other drug awareness presentations are available to student groups or offices on campus. CAPS also offers an Alcohol Risk-Management class for student groups. Brief substance abuse counseling is available at CAPS for both students and employees. If more intensive treatment is necessary, CAPS staff can facilitate a transfer to community services as necessary.
The State of Kansas provides substance abuse programs to all active, benefits-eligible employees of the State of Kansas, their dependents and other family members living in the same household through the State of Kansas Employee Assistance Program (EAP). For information about the EAP, contact the Office of Human Resources at 316-978-6123 or ComPsych at 1-888-275-1205 (option 7) to receive confidential assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week at no cost to the employee . Information about the EAP also is available at . Referrals to the EAP may be made by an employee鈥檚 supervisor to the Office of Human Resources when there are performance, behavior, or attendance problems. Employees who are ineligible for EAP services are eligible for substance abuse counseling at WSU's Counseling and Psychological Services.
The State of Kansas has established two substance abuse testing programs:
- State of Kansas Alcohol and Controlled Testing Program for Commercial Drivers. Applicants and employees who are required to maintain a Commercial Driver License for employment must submit to alcohol and controlled substance testing as a condition of employment. Current employees in commercial driver positions may be required to submit to the following tests: pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, random, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up. The purpose of the program is to prevent accidents and injuries that result from the use of alcohol or controlled substances.
- State of Kansas Drug Screening Program. State officers and state employees who are employed in safety-sensitive positions must submit to a drug screen at the time an offer of employment is made. Safety-sensitive positions include state law enforcement officers who are authorized to carry firearms, state corrections officers and parole officers, state employees at juvenile correctional facilities, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, the heads of Cabinet level agencies appointed by the Governor and employees on the Governor鈥檚 staff. Current employees in designated positions may be tested if there is reasonable suspicion of illegal drug use by the employee and that the employee is unable to perform the duties of the job safely.
