Honors College Student Council

The Cohen Honors College student council meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday at 5pm. All students are welcome to bring ideas and/or concerns to the council.

Email honorsassistant@wichita.edu, and your question, topic, or concern will be forwarded to council leadership.

Application

Applications to serve on the Honors College Student Council are due April 30th.

We are looking for students who want to develop as leaders and improve the Honors community. For more information, see the council mission and current members below.

Click to apply.

What does it mean to be a leader in Honors?

We have leaders in our labs, classroom, student organizations, and governance. Being a leader in Honors means working to discover your strengths and the strengths of others. Leadership sometimes means standing at the front of the room, but it sometimes means asking a thoughtful question or inviting someone else to speak. It means listening, observing, figuring out what are the greatest needs and working independently or collaboratively to meet those needs.

What does the student council do?

The council activities change every year, but the mission is the same: The Honors Student Council aims to develop a strong sense of community and common identity among Honors students by providing opportunities and serving as a refuge to all students of the Cohen Honors College. The Council uses innovative approaches to identify and address the challenges and needs of all Honors students and serves as the voice of students through communication with the staff, faculty and Dean of the Cohen Honors College.

But what have they done lately?

Recent initiatives led by the council include: changing Honors admissions messaging and application requirements, hosting Honors Hours and extended lounge hours, awarding fee scholarships, recommending a security camera in the lounge area

Student Council Mission

As an Honors Student, you have a voice in the governance of the Honors College in the form of the Honors Student Council. The Student Council seeks to use its constitutional influence to improve the student experience, and represent student interests.

According to the bylaws of the Honors College, the Student Council is one half of the College's governing body, the University Honors College Council. The other half is comprised of the Honors Faculty Council. The University Honors College Council is chaired by the Dean and serves as an advisory board to the Dean. The Honors Dean and Academic Advisor serve as ex-officio members of the Honors student and faculty councils.

Your Student Council is committed to amplifying the student perspective in college governance, and finding innovative ways to make being an Honors Student that much better.
