"Career Options for the English Student"

An informational workshop on career prospects for students with the English degree and tips for the job search (including how to translate English skills to a larger audience and where to find useful job search databases). The session will end with an informal workshop on the CV, resume, and cover letter. Undergraduate and graduate students are both welcome!

For students interested in pursuing an advanced degree in English--composition and rhetoric, literature, linguistics, or creative writing--this informational session discusses the application process and required materials, what to expect once in graduate school, and job prospects post-degree. Laura Mielke, associate professor of English at the University of Kansas, will be presenting a research talk on her recent book project, Provocative Eloquence: Theatre and the Limits of Anti-Slavery Oratory in the Antebellum U.S. The title of her talk is鈥淪hakespeare鈥檚 Portia and the North鈥檚 Argument against Slavery: An American Performance History.鈥

Language and Linguistics Colloquium Series

Jane Johnson from the University of Texas at Austin will give her presentation "Reflecting on Reflection: How Community Service Becomes Service-Learning."

International Linguistics Conference: "Formal Approaches to South Asian Languages 8"

This two-day conference features research presentations on aspects of the syntax, semantics, morphology, phonology or processing of South Asian languages and includes as invited speakers Roumyana Pancheva (USC), Veneeta Dayal (Rutgers University), and Emily Manetta (University of Vermont).
