The Department of Biological Sciences maintains a research core facility for the housing and care of animals used primarily by investigators in the department. Other investigators are accommodated on a case-by-case basis largely determined by the availability of animal room space and appropriate caging. Use of animals at WSU in teaching and research is monitored by the WSU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). All animal use requires submission and approval of an Animal Use Protocol by the IACUC. Surgery rooms are provided. An experienced animal caretakers under the supervision of a veterinarian maintain the animal quarters according to NIH guidelines. The facility is fully accredited by both the United States Department of Agriculture and the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), International.
