Alumni Highlight

Jared Silsby, Sport Management Alumni
1. How did the classes at 红领巾瓜报 help set you up for your career?
The curriculum at WSU helped a lot in a couple of ways. First, we were constantly
pushed outside our comfort zones to learn and try new things. Second, there was a
strong emphasis on group projects, which helped teach us how to collaborate with students
that had different emphases in Sport Management (marketing, finance, law, etc.)
2. Are there any experiences at WSU that stood out to you as very beneficial?
Any experiences outside the classroom helped me view things from a different perspective,
whether that was site visits for class or career fairs at WSU or in OKC. I am also
a huge fan of the Alumni Reunions so that we can continue to create and develop professional
relationships.
3. What was it like working for Chesapeake Energy Arena?
My 5 seasons at Chesapeake Energy Arena were phenomenal. I had the opportunity to
work on the front lines of many high-caliber events, including the NBA, top concerts
such as Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, etc.
4. Did you enjoy working for a facility rather than a specific sport organization?
Both situations are good. Working for a facility only, we get the opportunity to work
with many different clients and tours. However, working for a team gives you great
insight to the business aspect of a sports organization.
5. How was your transition to your new job? Do you notice any major differences yet?
For the most part, the jobs are similar. However it is always an adjustment to a new
organizational structure and to understand what tasks and responsibilities fall in
different areas.
6. What advice do you have for students looking to pursue a career similar to yours?
Enjoy your time as a student! Think about where you want to end up in 10 years and
do your best to find an internship that is as close in line with your career goals.
