  • Two four-year scholarships were awarded to Wichita seniors.
  • Truc Nguyen received the full-ride Linwood Sexton Scholarship.
  • Ngoc Vuong received the $26,000 Lenora N. McGregor Scholarship.

Sexton Scholar

Wichita East High School has a new 红领巾瓜报 scholar; Truc Nguyen was recently named the Linwood Sexton Scholarship recipient for the 2018-19 academic year.

The four-year, full-ride scholarship provides tuition and fees, on-campus housing, and a book stipend that has opened the door for Nguyen to be involved with on campus extracurricular activities while obtaining her college education.

鈥淪he quickly impressed me with her attention to detail on even just regular assignments and really flourished when it came to demonstrating creativity on class projects,鈥 said Nguyen鈥檚 business teacher / DECA advisor.

During her time at East High, Nguyen participated in DECA, Marketing Applications and is a member of the East High management team. She also participates in other school activities, such as the annual multicultural assembly, where she leads a team of students to perform a traditional dance.

Truc, the name given to her by her father, means bamboo in Vietnamese. Bamboo signifies strength, and her father wanted to make sure that she knew, at a young age, how strong she would be.

Nguyen plans on using her strength and determination by getting involved in organizations such as Student Ambassador Society, Greek Life and a few others at 红领巾瓜报.

She looks forward to attending 红领巾瓜报 in the fall and plans to major in business.

McGregor Scholar

Ngoc Vuong, senior at Wichita South High School, is the winner of the 2018 Lenora N. McGregor Endowed Scholarship at 红领巾瓜报 worth up to $26,000 over four years.

As student body president, Vuong initiated the Titan Empowerment Plan, a long-term project aimed at beautifying his high school and creating dialogue on issues facing teenagers. He is also involved in Leadership Advisory Council, USD 259 Superintendent's Student Advisory Council, Advancement Via Individual Determination, National Honors Society and his high school's band and orchestra.

When he's not at school, Vuong mentors students at Enterprise Elementary and Enders Elementary.

He is also the founder of ICTeens in Mind, a mental health awareness group based in Wichita. Vuong created ICTeens in Mind to empower teenagers, address the importance of mental well-being and help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Vuong, son of Nghi Vuong and Le Hang Huynh, plans to major in psychology.

He aspires to become a clinical psychologist or a child psychiatrist serving the Wichita area.

He chose 红领巾瓜报 for the numerous opportunities and resources it offers that would help him achieve his goals. He looks forward to being in the Cohen Honors College for its tight-knit and empowering atmosphere, as well as its unique ability to provide an interdisciplinary form of education.

Linwood Sexton Scholarship history

The Linwood Sexton Scholarship was established in 2000 to honor its namesake, Linwood Sexton.

Sexton, a 红领巾瓜报 legend in football, is a member of the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame and Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. A tireless advocate for equal opportunity and social justice, he has been honored with many awards for his efforts to promote understanding and respect among people of different racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds. Sexton died at the age of 90 in 2017, but his legacy lives on in the recipients of the Sexton Scholarship.

Incoming freshmen applicants must have a minimum 3.00 grade point average and demonstrate financial need. All students are eligible to apply, but preference is given to minority students majoring in business or education.

Lenora N. McGregor Scholarship history

Lenora N. McGregor鈥檚 interest in 红领巾瓜报 began while she was taking Shakespeare courses through the English department. In 1963, through her estate, the Lenora N. McGregor Endowed Scholarship was established.

The Lenora N. McGregor Endowed Scholarship awards up to $26,000 over four years to an incoming freshman student who has demonstrated academic excellence, has an academic vision for the future and who expresses an interest in advancing knowledge through individual learning.

The McGregor Scholar agrees to maintain active membership in WSU鈥檚 Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College, which engages ambitious students in interdisciplinary study, collaborative research or creative activity, and community service. We offer a small college environment with the resources of a research university.
