- Thinking Outside the Box
The activities will challenge students to think and problem solve in new ways. Engineering
and problem-solving teamwork activities will be presented.
- Building blocks of Human Factors Psychology
Dive into human factors research by joining graduate students in evaluating LEGO instructions
to determine the most effective way to put together a lego set. Learn about important
concepts from human factors psychology, such as user experience, accessibility and
inclusive design, and make applications to real-world examples.
- Mission Marbles: A Roller Coaster Adventure
You'll build a roller coaster track for marbles to see how much energy a roller coaster
needs to go through a loop without getting stuck.
- Paper Chromatography: A fun and colorful method of id and purification
Chemical mixtures can be broken into their component parts. One simple way of doing
this is a technique called paper chromatography. We will looking at various water-based
pigments to visualize this concept. Everyone can take their creations home with them
afterward!
- What鈥檚 with the Weather?
We will be learning how to tell the future by forecasting the weather! With maps and
current weather data, we'll make a guess on what the weather is going to be like coming
up. Along the way, we'll make our own snow, learn why the windy plains are so windy
using balloons, and even get up close to our high-tech tornado machine!
- DNA Fruit Extraction
DNA is in all living things - including the fruit we eat! In this workshop, we will
isolate DNA from fruit cells and watch it precipitate before our eyes.
- Crime Scene Chemistry: Fatal Flour
Grandma's being rushed to the hospital! She is complaining of severe stomach pain,
headache, fatigue, and weakness! The doctor suspects a drug interaction and needs
your help! Dr. Sweet learns Grandma cannot swallow pills and stores her bulk aspirin
and ibuprofen next to her baking ingredients. Is this an innocent accident or a baked
betrayal?!
- Scratch Programming for Everyone
In this activity, you will create a new project with Scratch and explore different
Scratch blocks to make the cat do something surprising! What will you create?
- Hoop Gliders
Students will design a glider made of a straw and 2 hoops, and test to see how far
it will fly. They鈥檒l have time to try 2-3 designs to see if they can improve the distance
they fly.
- Logic Gate Calculator: Building Brains with Binary
In this hands-on activity, students will build a simple 1-bit adder using logic gates
like AND, OR, and XOR on a online breadboard. They'll connect switches as inputs and
LEDs as outputs to see how binary numbers are added in real-time. This project demonstrates
the core concept behind digital calculators, showing how these basic building blocks
scale up to perform actual calculations in computers. Through this engaging exercise,
students will discover the power of logic gates in digital design.
