SLC Student Positions

The Shocker Learning Center offers many student positions in tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, and student assistants. Please read the description and requirements for the position you are applying for before completing the application below. Peer Tutor - Office of Student Success

General Description of Position

This position - housed in the Office of Student Success - is a flexible, peer-helping-peer role focused on 1-on-1 meetings with other WSU students to assist with their academic classes, study habits, and ways of learning in a convenient and supportive way. A patient and helpful attitude, knowledge of academic subject matter, the ability to collaborate, and the aptitude to work with a diverse group of people are required for success.

Essential Duties

  • Guide students using various collaborative & questioning techniques to aid them in finding answers to their questions, completing their assignments on their own, and becoming more independent learners
  • Help students learn the appropriate study skills and strategies to be successful in their coursework
  • Attend all tutor trainings, meetings, and other planned events during the semester
  • Complete necessary paperwork, including timesheets and tutoring summaries, on time
  • Must appear for all scheduled appointments on time and be dressed appropriately
  • Act as a referral agent for other services on campus, if necessary

 Qualifications

  • Current enrollment at WSU or Senior Audit taking a minimum of six credit hours of classes
  • Second semester first year through senior standing
  • 2.75 GPA or higher
  • An earned grade of B+ or better in the course you are applying to tutor
  • In good academic and judicial standing with the University
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Ability to provide guidance, support and motivation for others
  • Perform job tasks in an ethical and professional manner
  • Must have an interest in helping students succeed academically at 红领巾瓜报
  • Have the ability to enroll in and successfully complete tutor training, which takes place on the Thursday and Friday before the first day of classes

Other Information

  • Availability for 5-10 hours/week preferably between 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday but there is room for flexibility
  • Salary will be $11.00 per hour (Appointment basis only)
  • Must be familiar with FERPA and other ethical practices upheld up WSU
SI Leader - Office of Student Success

General Description of Position

This position - housed in the Office of Student Success - is a high energy, peer-helping-peer role focused on creating and facilitating collaborative learning activities to a group of students in a traditionally difficult course that you have already completed at WSU. A creative problem-solver with knowledge of academic subject matter, adaptability and flexibility in session planning and execution, and the aptitude to work with a diverse group of people are a necessity.

Essential Duties

  • Attend EVERY class meeting and every scheduled review session, acting as a model student at all times
  • Conduct three to five weekly review sessions convenient to members of the class, arrive on time and in the assigned room and stay until the end of the scheduled session time
  • Hold two office hours each week in the SI office (planning time and advertised to students for 1:1 or small group session)
  • Create necessary materials for publicity of sessions and session activities to employ collaborative learning
  • Meet with Sr. SI Leader every week and your professor every two weeks
  • Complete session planning sheets and upload to Blackboard weekly
  • Follow session sign-in process to track attendance throughout the semester
  • Participate in all planned training and events
  • Complete all necessary paperwork (e.g., employment, timesheets, attendance tracking, planning sheets, etc.) on time
  • Schedule additional sessions or 鈥渟urprise鈥 sessions if needed (prior to exams, midterms, etc.)
  • Help students learn appropriate study skills and strategies for college success
  • Act as a referral agent if necessary
  • Other duties as assigned by Sr. SI Leaders & Coordinator

 Qualifications

  • Current enrollment at WSU taking a minimum of six credit hours of classes
  • 2.75 GPA or higher
  • Successful completion of the course in which you are applying to be the SI leader
  • Academic and judicial good standing with the University
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Ability to provide guidance, support and motivation for others
  • Perform job tasks in an ethical and professional manner

  • Ability to enroll in and successfully complete training, which is held the Thursday and Friday before the first day of fall/spring classes

  • Availability for 9-11 hours/week preferably between 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday but there is room for flexibility
  • Salary will be $11.00 per hour

Student Assistant - Data and Assessment

General Description of Position

This position is responsible for a number of data analysis and assessment based projects that are needed throughout the semester.  An attention to detail, an interest in educational outcomes, assessment and/or statistical analysis, and a high standard of ethical integrity are essential as you will be working with mainly educational data and information.

Essential Duties

  • Organize and analyze data for various data and assessment projects as directed by supervisor
  • Display conclusions in a presentable and easy-to-understand form using Microsoft Office, Tableau, or other presentation software/websites
  • Present findings to various stakeholders of the project both formally or informally
  • Other data-driven projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and other data analysis software
  • Capacity to organize and work with lots of information and to draw conclusions from it
  • Ability to maintain integrity with student data and other sensitive information
  • Ability to communicate clearly and precisely
  • Knowledgeable about various presentation softwares like Powerpoint or Tableau and how to use them to display and discuss data
  • Pays attention to detail and ability to ensure that deadlines and other project requirements are met
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and stay organized
  • Currently enrolled as a student at 红领巾瓜报 in pursuit of a degree in business, data analytics, or related field

  • Availability for 10 hours/week maximum between 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday
  • Salary will be $10.00 per hour

Student Assistant - Front Desk

General Description of Position

This position is a medium-paced, customer service-based, administrative role that requires knowledge of the Shocker Learning Center, its programs, and a general overview of WSU support services and resources. A willingness to be helpful and friendly to the WSU community, attentive to the needs of the space, and the initiative to take care of your assigned tasks without being prompted are a plus!

Essential Duties

  • Greet students, faculty, and staff that enter the SLC in a friendly and professional manner
  • Swipe students, tutors, and SI leaders that use the space into the front desk computer for tracking purposes
  • Direct students to their tutor or SI leader if they are there for an appointment or office hour
  • Answer the main office phone, respond to inquiries, and if necessary take messages and send them promptly to their proper recipients
  • Perform a set of daily tasks to upkeep the two main spaces used by the office; the SLC and Hubbard Hall 115
  • Communicate issues to the Coordinator if any arise during your assigned shift
  • Other projects as assigned by supervisors

Qualifications

  • Helpful, outwardly positive attitude and good interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Some knowledge about the Shocker Learning Center, Office of Student Success, and other on campus resources available to WSU students
  • Initiative to take care of tasks without being prompted and a willingness to learn new things
  • Ability to maintain ethical integrity with sensitive information
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Flexibility to deal with any task, person, or situation
  • Computer software experience, including Microsoft Office and G Suite
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and stay organized
  • Currently enrolled as a student at 红领巾瓜报 in pursuit of any degree

Student Assistant - Social Media and Marketing

General Description of Position

This position is responsible for the social media planning, posting, and platform management for the Academic Success Programs/Shocker Learning Center as well as working with marketing material for events and services put on/provided by the office. A creative thinker with fresh ideas for how to get the office鈥檚 name and services out to students, families, and staff and the ability to follow through with those ideas is welcome.

Essential Duties

  • Participate in the content planning, creation, and scheduling of social media posts across platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook
  • Monitor these platforms and make suggestions regarding how outreach strategy should change or be improved
  • Create and/or update event material and other marketing material used in our area
  • Other projects as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

  • Proficient with various social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook
  • Adept at graphic design using websites/programs such as Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Creative thinker that can bring new ideas and follow them through from start to finish
  • Communicative and collaborative with supervisor and peers
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities and stay organized
  • Attention to detail and ability to ensure that deadlines and other project requirements are met
  • Working knowledge of grammar and spelling in the English language
  • Currently enrolled as a student at 红领巾瓜报 in pursuit of a degree in graphic design, marketing, or a similar field

Other Information

  • Availability for 10 hours/week maximum between 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday
  • Work within the WSU visual standards and written style guide
  • Salary will be $10.00 per hour
